FTGOC's MISSION

Our mission is to educate the community about the Fair Trade alternative and expand the market for Fair Trade products. By doing this we are helping farmers and artisans in developing countries get a fair price for their products, gain fair market access, improve their chances to care for their families and improve the condition of their communities. When you buy Fair Trade you get the chance to actively be a part of poverty alleviation, environmental protection and international peace.

FTGOC's GOALS

Our main goal is to work with the City of Orlando to pass a Fair Trade Resolution. This would mean that whenever the City Departments buy coffee, for example, they would choose the Fair Trade alternative. We are working to gain the support of the community and local organizations, businesses, groups, residents, etc. to be aware of the Fair Trade alternative, buy Fair Trade and help us get The Resolution passed with the City of Orlando.

Our supporting goals are to:

  • Educate the community about the Fair Trade alternative
  • Expand the market for Fair Trade products
  • Build a strong coalition of community groups supporting Fair Trade

We aim to accomplish this by:

  • Establishing Fair Trade Student Groups in elementary and high schools
  • Establishing Chapters of United Students for Fair Trade at local universities and colleges
  • Transitioning a minimum of 10% of vendor contracts at local universities and colleges to be Fair Trade
  • Sponsoring two annual events (World Fair Trade Day and Fair Trade Month in October)

HISTORY OF FTGOC

While there have been many individuals and groups buying Fair Trade products in the Greater Orlando area, there had not been a Fair Trade movement in the area until May 2006 when Fair Trade for a Greater Orlando Coalition (FTGOC) was founded. Since then, FTGOC has participated in and sponsored many community events such as the 1st and 2nd annual World Fair Trade Day Celebrations in Orlando observed on the second Saturday of May, as well as various activities in October 2006 during Fair Trade Month. For nearly two years FTGOC has worked to build a coalition of over a dozen local organizations supporting our cause and to create dialogue with elected officials. In late 2007, FTGOC began dialogue with the City of Orlando to establish Fair Trade purchasing policies.
